Ellicott City Paint It 2022 is in the books and here are the final results. I won a sponsored award from AARP of Maryland and a cash prize! The painting that won is called “Morning Light on Main”, it’s 12″x16″ oil on panel. It was an honor to be a part of a very talented group of artists. The experience was amazing and exhausting. The benefits were, I learned a lot, I met some great fellow artists, I had my first plein air competition and came out the other side an award winning artist. What a weekend.

To prepare, I did a bunch of preliminary studies, tried a bunch of locations, took photos at different times of day for the best light and it paid off. My plan consisted of knowing what I wanted to paint and what time of day, and I only veered off a couple times due to rain and unavoidable changes in schedule. My kit was fine-tuned, and I actually hand built my own rig based on the coulter easel a week before the event. It worked great and I recommend it if you like the style of that.
Thanks to the HoCo Arts council, AARP of Maryland, my fellow painters and my family for their support. My wife especially for handling the huge trees that fell in our yard the night before the event started, and my daughter Mevie for encouraging me and coming out to the award ceremony.
